The Au Ra are a race of humanoids with dragon features, most noticeably curved horns and patterns of scales on their otherwise smooth skin.

They're supposedly a distant offspring of dragons, but this is disputed by some scholars due to the big differences between the Au Ra and dragons. There's an Auri myth which tells of a Dawn Father and Dusk Mother from which all Au Ra are descended, while both Au Ra share this mythology this is also where their differences stem from.

Raen (DragonKin Multi Author 7)

The Raen believe their veins run thick with the blood of the Dawn Father, which is why they have white scales and an iron will. On the other hand you have the Xaela, they believe their veins run thick with the blood of the Dusk Mother, which is why they have black scales and a fiery will. Their differences don't end there. The Raen have settled down and live a peaceful life, while the Xaela live tribal lives full of conflict and war. Raen names are taken from mostly Edo era Japan, but in the Final Fantasy universe male names tend to relate more to strong, agile, and sometimes uncontrollable elements of nature.

Of course the revamped theme of Au Ra being demonic is possibly even more problematic than them be draconic as the in-game analog for "demons" is voidsent. Personally I feel that the Au Ra are draconic and I would like for them not to be the result of Allagan experiments, if for no other reason to help develop plot threads other than the "somehow it is always the Allagans' fault except when it is Ascians ".

I don't really have any reasoning for this besides personal preference. I hope as the game goes on, we continue to get more history of the various races of Hydealyn. Edit: On second thought considering Midgardsomr is probably from another shard maybe even the thirteenth voidsent vs draconic is likely a wash.

Actually Naria it's probably the Ascians' fault even when it it is the Allagans' fault. Their shtick is turning everyone into power hungry jerks. Khyzen: How much do we know of the first few calamities? Is it possible that Meracydia and Othard were a single continent before breaking off due to some cataclysmic event?
